This is another richly deserved award recognising Fred's commitment and dedication in not just setting up the Hurley colts section but also founding the football club and scouting organisation in the village.

Fred's nomination

Fred is one of local sport's good guys, an amazing man, selfless, unassuming and someone who best exemplifies the Spirit of Cricket. He joined Hurley in 1970 and played across 4 decades scoring 2 hundreds, taking 500 wickets and 100+ catches. Fred set up the colts section in 1975 and ran it almost single handedly until 2009 when he retired. Fred loves coaching and harnessing the talent and enthusiasm of young people. Fred also set up and ran Hurley Football club for more than 30 years and founded and ran Hurley scouts for 10 years.

He has left a legacy for generations of young cricketers in the Maidenhead Borough who would pay testimony to his dedication and good nature. Much of the current senior membership has come through the ranks.

Retirement for Fred isn't one for rest as he is still involved as a willing umpire or scorer if needed. Fred was groundsmen for many years and will still be there for a pre-season work party or Cricket Force event. Finally, Fred was snapped mowing the outfield in “a very dignified state of undress”, days before his 70th birthday, as part of a charity calender made by the villagers that raised £2,000!

Only one word can describe Fred Furneaux, LEGEND.
